*** 3/23/14 UPDATE ***
We are parents! David was born on 24 Feb 2014, about 3 months premature. He is still in the NICU and doing great. He's gained almost a pound over the last month and should be ready for bottle feeding in the next week or two. Laurie and I are keeping this site up for anyone who would still like to help. We're both in Phoenix, AZ with David for the time being. Mom will stay here but I have to go back to work on 4 April. We're staying at the Ronald McDonald house until I leave and then Laurie will stay here in the hospital with David. Thank you for all the love and support. We could not have done this without you guys! *** 3/23/14 UPDATE ***
*** UPDATE ***
We have met with our lawyer and have been given an estimate of $27,000 for our adoption cost. This is contengent on being successful on our first match. Laurie and I have completed our adoption profile books and will be shown to potential birth mothers soon. We have raised almost $2,000 on this site and have a total of about $20,000 on hand in our savings account. We are adjusting our fundraising goal for this site from $35,000 to $10,000. This is our final push. We appreciate all the assistance. The love and support shown to us is heartwarming.
*** UPDATE ***
Hello! We are Laurie and Dan Brissey. In December of 2012 we found out that we are unable to have children naturally. Laurie was diagnosed with fibroids and the surgery to remove them made child birth impossible. While we mourned the loss of our ability to start a traditional family, we are determined to be loving parents. We are in the process of trying to adopt an infant.
The cost of adoption varies greatly depending on the needs of the birth mother who chooses us to raise her child as our own. Most experts say the cost can be anywhere from $15,000 to $35,000.
We've already spent about $1,200 on training, our home study and background investigations. The next step in our process is choosing an agency or attorney and building our profile so we can be presented to potential birth mothers. We have funds available to pay the application fee and/or the lawyers retainer which could be up to about $5,000.
The next chunk of money we're going to have to pay is the unknown amount related to the needs of the birth mother. She may need living expenses, transportation to/from her doctors appointments, prenatal meds, counseling, hospital fees associated with the actual birth, and legal fees.
We are prepared to take out a loan to cover the costs, but we know that we have family and friends that would love to help. We're looking to raise $35,000 which should cover most contingencies. Any of the funds not used for the actual adoption process will be placed in a college fund. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for being a part of our lives.
